Motorcycle Speedway
Although many people think that motorcycle speedway is not a particularly popular sport at the moment it is, in fact, thriving both in the UK and on a global basis. Fans of motorcycle speedway will tell you that this is an exciting sport to watch and to participate in. It is thought that motorcycle speedway took off in Australia in the 1920s. It is now most popular in the UK and Europe.
Speedway races usually consist of 4-6 riders who will race around a circuit for a few laps at a time. The bikes here are part of the reason that the sport is so exciting to watch. They are specially designed to be light, have only one gear, have no suspension or brakes built in and have a low centre of gravity.
Riders can reach high speeds (the bikes run on methanol which makes them faster and more powerful than standard bikes) but have to steer using the back tyre so a lot of skill is involved here. And the manoeuvres that the riders have to make to turn corners make this a great spectator sport.
There are various championship events in motorcycle speedway. These include:
- The World Championship (for individual riders)
- The Speedway World Cup (for national teams)
- The Speedway World Pairs (for the top two riders in a country)
